Using cool-season annual grasses in your pastures can help reduce reliance on expensive winter hay.

Maintaining quality forage for your horse through the winter can be troublesome—you not only have to locate and purchase quality hay, but you also have to store it, distribute it and hope that you’ve calculated the right volume to buy. Depending on your situation, pasture supplementation via the use of cool-season annual grasses might be a more practical solution. In many parts of the country, September and October are the perfect times to overseed horse pastures with vigorous vegetation that thrives in cooler temperatures and will keep you—and your horses—satisfied until spring.
