Who wouldn’t want to find the proverbial pot o’ old at the end of the
rainbow? Dedicated owners and breeders have created Paint racing’s own Pot O’
Gold Futurity. Over the years, the Oklahoma fixture has filled people’s pockets
while showcasing some of the most talented racehorses in the breed’s history.
The late Virdin Royse, a longtime Paint racing proponent, began the Pot O’ Gold
Futurity, which had its first running in 1983. That gave the race a memorable
start as Joe Tass finished first but was disqualified to 10th. Fancy Swinger,
who finished second, was elevated to first in the 350-yard contest at Ross
Meadows, a non-pari-mutuel racetrack in Ada, Oklahoma, that is now a training
facility.
For most of the Pot O’ Gold’s history, horses have competed over 400 yards at
Blue Ribbon Downs in Sallisaw. But after Blue Ribbon closed in 2009, the
resilient race has found another new home for 2010 at Will Rogers Downs in
Claremore. |
